The Waxahachie Junior Service League was organized in 1952 in harmony with the policies of the Association of the Junior Service League of America, Incorporated. Betty Getzendaner was the first WJSL president.
The mission of the Waxahachie Junior Service League is to foster interest among its members in the social, economic, educational, cultural, and civic conditions of Ellis County, with a focus on organizations that serve women and children. Our goal is to provide volunteer services and donate funds to strengthen and improve these conditions in our community.
Since its inception, WJSL members have donated their time and talents in many areas. WJSL created the Story Hour and Toddler Time programs at Sims Library, has worked with non-profits such as Waxahachie CARE, Meals on Wheels, CASA, and Waxahachie ISD for a number of years, and created the “M&M Playground” at Getzendaner Park as a place for children with special needs to play. In addition, we have supported Ellis County students through two scholarship programs: the Sue Stroope art scholarship, an award of $500 annually, and our community service scholarships, which provide three students with $1,500 each every year.
Members of the Waxahachie Junior Service League make a six-year commitment to serve the community. Each member is required to work at least 50 hours per year as a community volunteer. WJSL raises money for the community through our annual Christmas Market, as well as sales of our cookbooks, which include “Gingerbread… and All the Trimmings,” an Ellis County favorite. WJSL’s Christmas Market raised more than $118,000 in 2023, all of which goes back into the community to support more than 40 non-profit organizations annually.
As our county grows, WJSL will increase its volunteer efforts and monetary giving accordingly to ensure we continue to support our non-profit organizations and the people who depend on them.
